Great saints have said that everything is ruled by karma, which operates by the law of cause and effect. Once you understand the laws of karma you can take steps to change unhelpful thoughts patterns or behaviours that may keep you in a cycle of karma that you would like to change. As light can transform the darkness, so also can spiritual effort, positive energy and will power dissolve the negative karma that might have ensnared us. There is no fixed destiny. You can pick and choose what is best for you.
