The study of the Yamas and the Niyamas culminates with Ishvara Pranidhana (Devotion to the Supreme Lord). One can learn all the the teachings and scriptures, but without devotion, he can not advance on the spiritual path. Yogananda’s Guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, whom Yogananda called Gyanavatar (incarnation of wisdom), emphasized the importance of devotion. He said, “The first and most essential thing on the spiritual path is to uncover the natural love of the heart; without that one cannot take one step on the spiritual path.”
