"Sound or vibration is the most powerful force in the universe. Music is a divine art, to be used not only for pleasure but as a path to God-realization."Paramhansa Yogananda

Most of us have heard chants since childhood. But few are shown how to use them consciously—to uplift awareness, calm the heart, and awaken a living relationship with God.

Paramhansa Yogananda gave the world a unique form of chanting—simple, accessible, yet charged with spiritual power.

In this guided chanting experience, you will not just sing—you will feel your energy rising, heart opening, and awareness expanding. Come join us for a transformative evening:

  • No prior experience needed
  • Simple melodies, deeply powerful
  • A supportive, devotional group energy

This is not a performance. This is not a casual bhajan evening. This is a sacred practice—a way to interiorize, to uplift consciousness, and to experience the Divine more tangibly in your own heart. Bring your friends and family along!

A Unique Style of Chanting

Paramhansa Yogananda wrote, “Songs or chants are usually inspired through sentiment or passing interests. But a song which is born out of the depth of true devotion to God and which is continuously chanted, audibly or mentally, with ever-increasing deep devotion until response is consciously received from Him in the form of communion, ecstasy, and boundless joy, is a spiritualized song.

“Such songs, like live matches, produce the fire of God-contact whenever they are struck on the foundation-stone of devotion. Ordinary songs are like wet matches that do not produce any spark of God-contact.”

Yogananda, a great yoga master who taught in the West (and whose teachings we follow), introduced a new form of chanting. He gave a new expression to devotion by writing chants with simple melodies and verses so anyone could sing them and yet uplift one’s consciousness in profound ways.

Swami Kriyananda, his direct disciple, also wrote many chants (along with 400 pieces of music) expressing the divine inspiration he felt from God and his Guru.

What Is Kriya Yoga?

"30 seconds of Kriya is equivalent to one year of natural spiritual unfoldment."
- Paramhansa Yogananda

Kriya Yoga is an ancient meditation technique that focuses on energy and breath control (pranayama). It is a timeless scientific method for working with the life force to bring greater stillness, intuition, and inner joy. Enlightened sages have taught it for thousands of years.

Patanjali mentions it in his Sutras, and Krishna mentions it in the Bhagavad Gita. Kriya works by giving the practitioner control of the life force. Through life-force control, the yogi can overcome all obstacles that prevent union with the divine.

The Kriya technique was kept secret for many centuries. It was revived in 1861, when the great yogi Mahavatar Babaji taught the technique to his disciple Lahiri Mahasaya. Lahiri then taught the technique to his disciple Sri Yukteswar, who taught it to his disciples, including Paramhansa Yogananda.

Yogananda then popularized Kriya Yoga through his book Autobiography of a Yogi and through his public teaching in the West. Kriya has been taught in an unbroken link of spiritual succession to this day.

This session will help you understand the purpose, benefits and the power of Kriya Yoga. You can then begin your journey of learning Kriya Yoga through the courses offered at Ananda Sangha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are seats reserved?

Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrive on time. We will start the kirtan sharp at 6:00 pm.

Who is leading this kirtan?

The kirtan will be led by chanters and devotees from Ananda Sangha. You can learn more about us here and about our line of Gurus.

Which language will the chants be in?

The chants will be sung in both Hindi and English.

How is this different from other kirtans or devotional concerts?

We are disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda. Our selection of chants will include chants written by Yogananda and his direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda. While most kirtans may energise you in the moment, their inspiration is not long-lasting and often more restless than devotional. The purpose of this kirtan is to take you deeper into your inner Self, where you can tangibly feel God’s presence. You will learn how chanting can be used as an effective tool for meditation and spiritual growth.
